Intervista a Carol Christo

Wow, I started to get really into the cartoon when I was about nine and it was huge: like everyone I loved it and I had toys and I had a megazine about everything that happened about Pokémon; and when I played something it was about Pokémon, the videgame as well. So I always liked it and when I first heard bout Nintendo and they make a Pokémon game, I was "Wow, that's gonna be something, because it's huge and people always loved it and that's nothing new, actualy new, about Pokémon, so that's something". It was right whene Minecraft books were selling crazy, and the kids aroud my age when I loved Pokémon were so into Minecraft, so I just thought "Wow, that could be a nice adventure if I get like normal kids to do something about Pokémon" and I was just thinking about it like "Okey, that would be something, what can i actually do about it?". And then the app came out. When I first playing the game I was like "Wow, they're just mixing the real world with Pokémon? That's a book there, that's definitely a book". So I just sit down and wrote it.

If you really thing about it they end up really mixing. I enter in the publishing business about five years ago and writing has came out in college and I was always into books and I had a blog to write about books when I was a teenager. I started in a publisher working with children's books and I loved it, it's the best part of the work I made. I love working with the middle grade authors and editing text. I started writing... I think it was 2013, and I wrote a short story for a collection of short stories, and I started to research and going to the fair, talking to authors and editors... I really got into the children's books, and after lots of time working on it, you can see what works and what doesn't, what the children really like to read, and that's help me a lot when I'm writing. I started doing ghost writing project as well and that just came really helpful.

Well, I don't think about borders at all. I mean, there are children everywere and they're the same. if you thing about it, I don't see any barriers between books here or in Brazil or in the United States. United States has books everywhere, it dosen't matter where it is, it's all a big country and it dosen't matter, they love it. I think it's like this everywere, it just happens more in the United States because the industrie is so huge and it has such power all over. So I don't see it: I think children will love a book if it's good, no matter where it come from.

I thing that's the most important thing in the world. Yuo have to talk to children and you have to make them listen; and I just wish the parents were be so... I would say protective because chlidren are a lot smarter than we think they are. They can handle all kind of subjects if you find the right way to talk to them. I think we have to do it, it's an obligation to do it. And we have to..just don't think about children like..don't think they are least than they are because they are not.

I think it always does, but I don't actually have a way to see what's really different from me in writing and any other author. I just.. when I wrote Pokémon I was thinking in an international way so I didn't make it like the story is setted in a city in Brazil, I though about a city that could be everywhere in the world. And the children actually can be any from anywhere. Maybe my challenge was to think about character that were different from each other and actualy to think about the girl to not be the scared one or the one that just follow the other ones. She's actually delight. That was very important to me, to make her kind of girl power deliver, even if she's not the protagonist.

It has to happen where they are children. Pokémon was my first sold out book and it was an open door to me, so I have two books come out this year later on and they're both very strong, and one has a girl as protagonist and the other one has a boy protagonist, but the  boy has this female partner who's very strong. And the book whose protagonist is a girl..- she's very strong. I try to make famale caracter this way if I can to. When we think especially about midle grade section most books are about boys protagonists, boy who conquest a girl in an adventure. And we really have to change this. When you think about young adults there are a lot more strong female caracters: we have  Katniss Everdeen, Hermione Granger and so on; so that's something because that's the youngest audience so they have to grow up reading about strong female characters. We spend so much time waiting for that so we have to have more. Girls reader should have this prospective, they should have someone to look to in books. I used to that whene I was a kid and I don't have any. I was looking for it and I couldnt find it so I hope they could do it now.

I hope I can find a fun way to do it, I don't want the book t be teachy, like a science teacher write for them to learn. When I was a child I loved science and I didn't see it in books, we have to learn it in the old-fashin way. So  when I was writing I said "That would be a nice opportunity for a science teacher to say "Look at this concept, it's so easy" and to teach them just how it happens". I actually had my fiancee helping me with the concept beacause I wasn't really shure about how to do it. But he's like crazy about science stuff and he was reading the book when I was writing and he said "Here you use this concept and it could be so much fun if they can get away from this situation using science" and it was great so I wrote it. When I talked to some teachers in Brazil they said they use this book as an opportunity to teach. And all the science teachers says "Let's do something about this" and I think it could be great doing this together.

I think children have to think about adult problem, adult issues; but they don't need to experience it. They have to be aware of it and we have to talk about it to them, but we have to make a way for them to understand it without feeling scared about the future or growing up. We have to make them powerful, but also understanding those situations. So don't be scared to talk to them about anything but just make it propierly to them to understand.

Brazil is a very big country so if you go to the south it's completely different from the north: it sees like you are in different countries but you're in one. What I think Brazil has, that I really admire, it's that people like you no matter Like if you go anywhere, if you go to any other countries as a Brazilian you're able to admire it and to make friends of there. That's something that people like of it. I have been in lots of countries... Italy is actualy near to Brazil for that beacuse Italians are always happy and talkative. People use to go to the streets and talk each others. That's something I found it's very similar. When I go to other countries I love this kind of warm that Brazilians have.

I graduated highschool in the United States, and I lived in Mexico where I studied Spanish. I stayed for few months in Paris, and than I stayed in Florence here for a few months in thrse different years (2014, 2015, 2016), and now I'm here for two months, I'll leave in May.

I think is the most important thing. If you have children and you're able to take them everywhere, take them, because it's how they see how the world works, and they meet people who's different from them. And they'll be able to have empathy for everyone, because they know that people, it dosen't seem like a far away thing. They talk to them and see how they are.
I thing that if each person has a best friend from a different country in the world, there will never be any war. Beacuse if you get to know someone who's different from you, there's no possible way you hurt them.
